Department of Fisheries and Marine Science

1. The Department of Fisheries and Marine Science pursues the Vision of the National University of Timor-Leste and the Faculty of Agriculture, which is to be the Center of Excellence for Higher Education in Timor-Leste.

2. The Department of Fisheries and Marine Science additionally pursues its own Vision, which is Excellence and Leadership in science and technology in the areas of Fisheries and Aquaculture, pursuing the Sustainable Development Goal SDG14 and the Blue Economy for Timor-Leste.

1. To prepare students for entry into professional life with high-level skills in agricultural science and technology;

2. To develop and advance science applied to education, research, and community service;

3. To develop science and technology in the field of agriculture for national development;

4. To carry out learning in education, research, and development of agricultural science and technology to solve current problems in this area;

5. To monitor the state of the environment and its relationship with agriculture in a sustainable and ecological way;

6. To guarantee and support science and technology within the scope of food security;

7. To promote science and technology within the scope of self-sufficiency in national agro-industry and agro-commerce;

8. To educate the human person with respect for God, country, family, neighbor, and the environment.

1. To train human resources with technical and scientific skills in fundamental areas of Marine Sciences, namely, in the rational exploitation of marine resources and ecosystems, in fisheries and aquaculture, in marine biotechnology, and in coastal management. The aim is to prepare human resources with highly specialized skills and comprehensive knowledge that enable them to conduct scientific studies and research that may lead to the discovery of natural phenomena related to fisheries, aquaculture, and marine resources.

2. To produce graduates capable of protecting natural resources, understanding conservation methods to maintain sustainable principles in the exploitation of water and fisheries ecological resources, in accordance with the concept of blue economy development and the implementation of the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focused on the economy, society, and ecology, especially with regard to Goal 14 – Life below water.

1. Excellence – Each member must strive for excellence, do their best, and develop the best skills. Mediocrity will be progressively replaced by quality and meritocracy.

2. Creativity & Innovation – Members must constantly explore new methods and technologies to disseminate knowledge and services. Teachers and students will be encouraged at the level of experimentation and research.

3. Transformation & Continuous Learning – Growth and change are inherent in all organisms and systems, and continuous learning reflects this reality in all aspects. Members must be prepared for their own transformation to maintain competitiveness in a rapidly changing world.

4. Leadership – Leadership is established by each member through dignified and respectable actions. 5. Collaboration – Everyone must work in an integrated manner, rising above personal ambitions and supporting each other.

5. Transparency & Accountability – Everyone must act with dedication to transparency and accountability for their actions, in order to defend the higher interests of the People of Timor-Leste. Everyone will rise above all limited interests – individual or group – and will be held accountable for the results.
